APL Hair Removal
Permanent hair reduction using the power of filtered light
APL - Accumulated Pulse Light - is a light-based hair removal technology that targets the melanin (pigment) in hair follicles, applying focused bursts of filtered light to destroy the follicle and prevent regrowth. Unlike IPL, APL does not emit UV light, making it safer for the skin. Our APL specialist Louise King has helped hundreds of clients achieve permanent hair reduction across a wide range of skin types and treatment areas.

Varies by area (15–60 min per session)

The Process
Free Consultation
Before any treatment, Louise conducts a thorough consultation to assess your skin type, hair colour, medical history and treatment suitability. A patch test is performed at least 24 hours before your first treatment.
Treatment Session
A cold gel is applied to the treatment area to protect the skin. You and Louise both wear protective glasses throughout. The APL handpiece is moved across the skin, delivering controlled pulses of light. The sensation is often described as a snapping rubber band - brief and tolerable.
Post-Treatment Care
The area may appear slightly red for a few hours. Hair in the treated area will continue to shed over the following 1–3 weeks. Sessions are spaced 4–8 weeks apart to capture different stages of the hair growth cycle.
Aftercare Advice
Avoid sun exposure to treated areas for at least 2 weeks before and after treatment
Apply SPF 30 or higher to treated areas when outdoors
Do not wax, pluck or use depilatory creams between sessions - shaving is fine
Avoid hot baths, saunas or vigorous exercise for 24 hours after treatment
Apply a gentle, fragrance-free moisturiser to soothe the treated area
Do not use self-tan products on treated areas
FAQs
- What is the difference between APL and IPL?
- Both are light-based hair removal technologies. APL (Accumulated Pulse Light) uses filtered light pulses that do not include the UV spectrum, making it safer for the skin. The technology is designed to deliver more controlled, effective pulses for permanent reduction.
- How many sessions will I need?
- Most clients require 4–6 sessions to achieve permanent hair reduction. Occasionally up to 8 sessions may be needed. This is because hair grows in cycles - the APL light is only effective on hairs in the active growth phase. Multiple sessions catch all hairs across their different growth stages.
- Does it hurt?
- Most clients describe the sensation as a snapping rubber band or a brief sting. A cold gel is applied before treatment to minimise discomfort. Tolerance varies by individual and treatment area - thinner skin areas can be more sensitive.
- Can APL hair removal treat all skin types?
- APL is suitable for most skin types. Suitability is assessed during your consultation - skin tone, natural hair colour and any medical factors all play a role. Very blonde, white or grey hairs respond less effectively as the light targets melanin pigment.
- Can I have other treatments during the course?
- Yes - many clients combine APL hair removal with other treatments. We'll advise on any interactions at your consultation.
