The Process
Assessment
The affected nails are assessed and the course of treatment is discussed. Nails may be filed to reduce thickness before treatment.
Laser Treatment
The Q-switched ND:YAG laser is applied to each affected nail. The laser energy penetrates the nail plate to destroy the fungal cells beneath. Patients may feel a warming or mild pricking sensation.
Review & Repeat
Treatments are performed every 2 weeks for 4 sessions in total. Results become visible as new, healthy nail grows from the root - typically visible within 6 weeks.
Aftercare Advice
Keep feet and nails clean and dry to prevent reinfection
Wear clean cotton socks and breathable footwear
Treat any athlete's foot simultaneously to prevent cross-contamination
Replace old shoes which may harbour fungal spores
Apply an antifungal nail lacquer between sessions if recommended
Continue nail hygiene practices after the course to prevent recurrence
FAQs
- What causes onychomycosis?
- Fungal nail infections are caused by dermatophyte fungi, which thrive in warm, moist environments. They are commonly acquired in communal areas like swimming pools, gyms and changing rooms. People with diabetes, weakened immune systems or poor circulation are more susceptible.
- Why is laser treatment better than cream?
- Topical antifungal creams struggle to penetrate the nail plate to reach the infection. Oral antifungals are effective but carry side effects and require monitoring. Laser treatment targets the fungus directly through the nail without systemic side effects.
