Which is Right for You?
Balayage
Natural & Sun-Kissed
Freehand painted highlights concentrated at the ends and mid-lengths. Grows out gradually with no harsh lines. The most natural-looking of the three techniques.
If you want a low-maintenance, beachy look
Ombré
Bold & Dramatic
A clear gradient from dark roots to noticeably lighter ends. The transition is more defined than balayage, creating a striking two-tone effect. Very fashionable and statement-making.
If you want a bold, high-contrast look
Sombré
Subtle & Elegant
A soft, understated version of ombré. Roots blend gently into lighter tips - perfect if you love the idea of ombré but prefer something more natural-looking and easier to maintain.
If you want natural dimension without drama
The Process
Colour Consultation
Your stylist will discuss your goals, assess your hair's current condition and colour history, review reference images and agree on a personalised plan. A patch test is booked 48 hours before the appointment.
The Colour Application
Using a freehand technique with a paddle brush or hands, your stylist paints lightener or colour onto sections of hair - focusing on where sunlight would naturally fall. No foils are used for standard balayage, giving a softer, more diffused result.
Toner & Finish
Once the colour has developed, a toner is applied to refine the shade, neutralise brassiness and add shine. Your hair is then washed, conditioned, dried and styled to show off the final result.
Aftercare Advice
Wait 48–72 hours before washing your hair after treatment
Use a colour-safe, sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner to preserve your colour
Apply a weekly deep conditioning or bond-repair treatment to maintain shine and strength
Avoid prolonged sun exposure without UV-protective hair products
Use heat protection spray whenever you blow-dry or style with heated tools
Book a gloss or toner treatment every 6–8 weeks to keep the colour fresh and vibrant
FAQs
- What is the difference between balayage, ombré and sombré?
- Balayage is a freehand painting technique - colour is swept onto the hair to create soft, natural-looking highlights concentrated towards the ends. Ombré (meaning 'shadow' in French) creates a more dramatic gradient, transitioning from very dark roots to significantly lighter ends. Sombré is a softer, subtler version of ombré where roots blend gradually into lighter tips with no harsh line.
- How long does balayage take?
- A full balayage appointment typically takes 2.5 to 4 hours depending on your hair length, thickness and the extent of the colour change. We recommend booking a separate consultation first so we can give you an accurate time estimate.
- Does balayage damage your hair?
- All lightening treatments involve some chemical process, but balayage tends to be gentler than traditional foil highlights because it's applied more sparsely. We use bond-protecting additives and a conditioning treatment is included. The condition of your hair will be honestly assessed at consultation.
- How often do I need to maintain balayage?
- One of balayage's great advantages is its low maintenance. Most clients return every 3–6 months for a refresh. In between, we recommend regular gloss or toner treatments (approximately every 6–8 weeks) to keep the colour vibrant.
- Can I go from dark hair to balayage in one session?
- This depends on your natural hair colour and your target shade. A significant lift from very dark hair may require multiple sessions to protect hair health. At your consultation, we'll assess your hair and give you an honest timeline.
